The windmill is a typical Dutch landmark. There are hundreds of windmills in The Netherlands, however the Sloten Windmill is a unique one. This windmill is a complete reconstructed polder mill and dates from 1847. It is an octagonal thatched oak wood mill and together with the ‘Akergemaal’, an electrical water pump, the mill takes care of the de-watering of the region Amsterdam West. The Sloten Windmill is located in the village Sloten, along the Haarlemmermeer Ring canal, just within the city borders of Amsterdam.
The Sloten Windmill – Amsterdam is open year round. The miller offers guided tours and tells everything about living and working in a windmill. If there is sufficient wind, you will see the miller at work.
The windmill is accessible for elderly and people in wheelchairs, as there is an elevator inside the mill.
Rembrandt van Rijn, also the son of a miller, had a special connection with Sloten. In the ‘attic’ of the mill, you can admire a presentation of several wax characters painted by Rembrandt.
The Sloten Windmill is an exceptional experience when visting Amsterdam!
After your visit, enjoy a leisurely stroll through the authentic village of Sloten. You can also visit the brewery next door: ‘De 7 Deugden’ (‘The 7 Virtues).
