The tour departs nearby Amsterdam Central Station and takes you within 20-minutes to the windmill village of Zaanse Schans. Here, you can admire the original 18th and 19th-century architecture, including still functioning windmills and typical Dutch wooden houses. Watch live demonstrations of artisans at work, such as a clog maker. There is some free time to further explore the village on your own.
The Pearl of the former Zuiderzee
Then, your tour continues through the typical polder landscapes (‘polder’ is reclaimed land from the water) to Edam. The beautiful and historic town of Edam is also known as ‘The Pearl of the former Zuiderzee’. Edam’s cobbled streets and quiet canals are lined by beautiful 17th-century buildings. These include the leaning Carillon tower, the ‘Grote Kerk’ (Big Church) and the former town hall. Well-known for its cheese, the public weighing house is without doubt the most famous building in Edam. During the summer months, the popular Cheese Market is held every Wednesday. After a stroll, you will have the opportunity to see how Edam cheese is made and enjoy a cheese tasting at a cheese farm nearby.
Your last stop during the Volendam, Edam and Windmills Day Tour is the fishing village, Volendam. Enjoy a short walk and explore the maze-like streets, where you can see the St. Vincent’s Church and the Fish Auction. After, enjoy a lovely walk along ‘De Dijk’ (The Dike) and soak in the beautiful views of the IJssel Lake.
